Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
Since 1971
What is your primary product or service?
The Studio School, founded in 1971, is an independent, not-for-profit, day school on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, serving children ages 2 through 14. We carefully combine the art and science of teaching, and have crafted a powerful approach that integrates the intellect and the emotions, the product and the process, the ‘what to learn,’ with the ‘how to learn.’ Our students are enthusiastic about coming to school, and develop a lifelong love for learning.
Studio’s innovative program combines a rigorous academic curriculum with an emphasis on building students’ social-emotional intelligence. This unique experience is based on a multi-layered and intricate process of teaching and learning that our teachers bring to the students and the curriculum. Throughout the past forty years, The Studio School has created an education that is both timely and timeless—a continuum that is classical, traditional, progressive, and modern.
Besides meeting the high academic standards set for them, our students are self-motivated, purposeful, and accomplished award winners and leaders.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
In 1971, in the heart of Greenwich Village, an experiment in education was started in a one-room schoolhouse with twenty-five students, aged 4-12, called “The Studio on Eleventh Street.” The name “Studio” is as apt today as it was when our school was founded. Now, as then, “Studio” conveys the image of a place where students have the time to explore ideas and materials, and make discoveries and connections. Through this process, students attain freedom of thought and feeling, along with the discipline to find meaningful forms of expression.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
Studio’s innovative program combines a rigorous academic curriculum with an emphasis on building students’ social-emotional intelligence. This unique experience is based on a multi-layered and intricate process of teaching and learning that our teachers bring to the students and the curriculum.
